Full Umm Shomar Region Trek (10 days)

Starting in the heart of the rugged high mountaina of Sinai, this trek takes you to the second tallest peak of Egypt to see the the coastal sandy plains at El Tur city which you will reach a couple of days later, then turns back to the high mountains to climb another challenging peak before finally finishing in the surreal Blue Desert close to the starting point.

Highlights: colourful valleys and Bedouin gardens; Byzantine monastic settlement; Mt. Umm Shomar with spectacular views of the sandy plains at El Tur and the Gulf of Suez; Wadi Isla with narrow canyons, creek and lush vegetation; reaching the plains at El Tur; Bedouin gardens and date palms among massive boulders; the mighty Mt. Abu Masaud with magnificent views to the central mountain range and wadis; Byzantine Noamises on hilltops and passes; seasonal granite waterpools; views of the Blue Desert from mountain passes above and from ground level.

Day 01
  •  Departure in Jeep from the town of St. Catherine’s to Wadi Sdud
    • Hike down Wadi Sdud to Wadi El Malez
    • Two well preserved gardens
    • 100 year old Bedouin dwellings
    • Beautiful view high mountain region including of Mt Sinai and Mt Catherine
  • Walk towards and on to Wadi Eshlul
    • Enter Ulad Said territory
    • Bedouin Ruins
  • Continue through Wadi Rasis to Namena
    • Well
  • Stop for Bedouin tea at Namena
    • Ulad Said settlement
  • Walk towards evening campsite at Rotak
  • Arrive at campsite (cameleers have set everything up a few hours beforehand)
    • Modern Bedouin dwelling
  • Dinner

Day 02
  •  Breaksfast
  • Depart from Rotak and walk up wadi Rofra
    • Walk up wadi Rofra
  • Walk towards Naqb Abu Amrain
    • Nice view of expansive deserts on both sides
    • Pass old Bedouin cemetery
  • Walk down Wadi Rahaba
    • Stop for tea at the Protectorate Environmental Center
    • Large open desert plain
  • Byzantine Ruins
  • Walk up Wadi Zaiwateena
    • Lunch break
    • Garden,Well and Dwelling
  • Continue up Wadi Zaiwateena towards Wadi Breka
    • View of Mt Abu Shejera and Umm Shomar
    • View of the beautiful Wadi El Breka Gorge
  • Descent into Wadi El Breka towards Dier Rumhan
    • Monastery of Rumhan
  • Camp in Wadi Rumhan
  • Dinner

Day 03
  •  Breakfast
  • Depart from Wadi Rumhan
    • Climb up to Diset Narhla pass
  • View of the climb up Umm Shomar
    • Option to back out and visit the Monastery of Antush
  • 2 hr climb up Umm Shomar, the second highest peak in Egypt (2,621m)
  • Beautiful views of South Sinai
    • El Tur
    • Jebel Katrina
    • Red Sea
    • Wadi El Kharita
    • Wadi Umm Leha
    • Wadi Shedik
    • Wadi Rummhan (our campsite)
    • Wadi Rahaba
    • On a clear day the continent of Africa can be seen across the red sea
  • Lunch on Umm Shomar
  • Climb back down to campsite at Wadi Rumhan. (Everything set up by cameleers)

Day 04
  •  Breakfast
  • Climbing to the Seil Muajed pass
    • Spectacular views of the sandy plains of El Tur and the Gulf of Suez
  • Seil Muajed
    • Steep, narrow and long valley leading to the plains
  • Lunch along the way
  • Arrive at campsite at Wadi Isla
  • Dinner

Day 05
  •  Breakfast
  • Continuing down in Wadi Isla
    • Wadi gets narrower
    • Creek, ponds and lush vegetation in canyon
  • Lunch
  • Optional: walking to the sandy plains at the end of Wadi Isla
  • Returning to camp
  • Dinner

Day 06
  •  Breakfast
  • Going back up in Wadi Isla
    • Ancient irrigation channel
    • Wadi running between colourful rock walls
    • Bedouin gardens and date palms among massive boulders
  • Lunch along the way
  • Arrive at campsite at Bier Gusuriya
  • Dinner

Day 07
  •  Breakfast
  • Continuing in Wadi Gusuriya
    • Granite pools
  • High passes at Tallat el Jamal
    • View of Wadi Kit running to the South
  • Lunch along the way
  • Arrive at campsite at Naqb Ashmeyer
  • Dinner

Day 08

  • Starting the climb to Mt. Abu Masaud
    • Spectacular views of the mountain range
    • Lunch on the top
  • Descending to Wadi Nasb
    • Passing several Byzantine noamises
  • Arrive at campsite in the settlement of Wadi Nasb
  • Dinner

Day 09

  • Continuing in Wadi Abu Ksheib
    • Byzantine noamises on top of pass
    • Seasonal granite water pools
  • Lunch along the way
  • Continuing in Wadi Abu Ksheib
    • Water well of Bier Shuel
    • Spectacular views to the basin of the Blue Desert
  • Descending to campsite in the Blue Desert
  • Dinner

Day 10
  •  Breakfast
  • Exploring the Blue Desert
    • Wide, open sandy basin with granite rock formations scattered around
    • Encircled by high mountain ranges
    • Hills and boulders painted blue by Belgian artist
  • Lunch
  • Returning to St. Katherine by Jeep
